The Tote Project began with a hopeful dream shared by two best friends: to use fashion and creativity to support survivors of human trafficking. It launched in 2013 during a plastic bag ban, offering high-quality reusable bags in place of disposable ones.

As a fair trade brand, The Tote Project works only with suppliers that hold fair trade certifications or memberships, and their certifications help ensure trafficking-free supply chains. The Tote Project says all of its cotton canvas is, at minimum, GOTS certified organic, and about 70% of its products carry an additional Fairtrade cotton certification.

The Tote Project donates 10% of its profits to nonprofit organizations aligned with its cause, and has raised over $50,000 for programs like career academies for trafficking survivors, trafficking prevention for foster care youth and therapeutic art classes for survivors and their children.
