In Zababdeh, a village in the northern West Bank, and the towns around it, a team of women artisans makes learning toys for toddlers and preschoolers. Zeki Learning, whose name means sweet and smart in Arabic, is a Fair Trade certified non profit brand dedicated to fair wages and working conditions, job opportunities and training for the women it employs.
Zeki Learning says each of its learning resources is completely handmade by its women artisans, nearly all of whom are mothers. Its toys are designed by experienced teachers and educators with Montessori principles in mind, and the company says it uses locally sourced materials and upcycles fabric scraps.
Zeki Learning is a project of Child's Cup Full, an idea that began in 2008 when Dr. Janette Habashi, a professor of educational psychology at the University of Oklahoma, joined her students in raising money for education programs for refugee children in the West Bank. Later, a group of local mothers asked her to help them find work, and she chose to create jobs for them. Today Zeki toys are used in Head Start centers, Montessori early childhood centers and other child development centers across the United States and Europe.
