Textiles are a language and living visual art form in Laos.
Founder, Elizabeth Suda, was lured to the landlocked country by the natural dyes and handloom weaving she read about. While living there, she witnessed expert women weavers masterfully making natural dyes from leaves, mud, insect resin, and seeds and then weaving them into exquisite skirts they wore everyday.
Sustainable fashion, it turns out, is not a new concept at all. It is a way of life that endures in heritage craft.
This dress is an intricate piece of wearable art designed by ARTICLE22 and hand crafted by women in Laos. Each is hand made from cotton dyed naturally with indigo and a wax relief technique called batik. The pieces are masterfully patched together with hand embroidered cotton and playful market fabric available in two colors.
