In Rwanda, Ghana and refugee camps, artisans, most of them women, make heirloom quality pieces that blend heritage technique with modern design. Since 2007, Indego Africa has worked to help women owned businesses in Africa grow, and today it partners with 26 independent, artisan owned businesses, which the company says are primarily owned by women.
Indego Africa sources its materials from local markets and farms, using fibers indigenous to the countries where it works, and says each product, from weaving to woodcarving, is handcrafted using heritage techniques. It builds long term, transparent relationships with its artisan partners, working together to set fair pricing and ensure fair wages.
Through business, leadership and vocational training, Indego Africa helps its partners become self sufficient entrepreneurs who run and scale their own businesses. Its artisan partners work with Indego Africa, not for it, and the company believes that when women are supported, they become powerful engines of growth for their families and communities.
