A chance meeting in Ecuador sparked something beautiful. Raul, an entrepreneur from Quito, met Kirsten, from Kearney, Nebraska, while she was volunteering in Ecuador, and he introduced her to the textiles made by Indigenous artisans from Otavalo, in the highlands of Ecuador. Their first blanket purchase together marked the start of Beyond Borders Collective, which they founded in Quito in 2017.
Today, from their home in Kansas City, Missouri, Raul and Kirsten offer blankets, throws and leather accessories made in partnership with artisans from Ecuador, the USA and beyond. They partner with artisans who work in healthy environments, and the yarn their artisans use for each blanket is 100% post-consumer recycled acrylic.
Every product is meant to honor the hard work of the artisans who make it and to bridge the gap between cultures. The blankets have been part of their own story too, from a first date picnic on a rooftop overlooking Quito to their engagement on that same rooftop and many cozy movie nights.
