Caralarga's story began in 2014, when Ana Holschneider and Socorro Gasca began making jewelry and clothing from the raw cotton thread and textile waste of the old El Hércules factory. Ariadna García later joined the team as General Director, and Caralarga, a textile design and production workshop in Querétaro, Mexico, expanded into interior decoration pieces that highlight the qualities of raw materials.
Caralarga partners with craft workshops in Querétaro neighborhoods such as Hércules, La Cañada and Sombrerete, and with the Taller Maya in Yucatán, where, it says, artisans turn sansevieria into thread dyed with natural pigments. Creating each piece, in Caralarga's words, involves a collective and creative legacy built in community, and Caralarga believes the work of textile designers and artisans is a source of pride.
In Caralarga's own words, three principles guide its craft: natural biodegradable materials, recovery and reuse, and the creation of timeless pieces. Its "Recuperado" technique, for example, reuses leftover cotton thread from large pieces to create new ones.
