On a family farm in Zululand, South Africa, the McMurray family founded SOiL in 2004 from a passion to bring essential oils to homes and families. What began as a small agricultural project now grows tea tree, lemon-scented tea tree, lemongrass, eucalyptus and niaouli using only certified organic methods, the family says, with fields kept by labor-intensive practices like hand weeding.

SOiL runs its own on-site distillery. Each day, freshly harvested plants are chipped, loaded and gently steam-distilled, the boilers are fueled with waste wood from neighboring properties, and leftover plant material goes back to the land as mulch. Water comes from the farm's own borehole and rainwater catchment, and an off-grid solar system powers the work.

SOiL manages every step in-house, from the field to blending and packaging, so every product can be traced. It is certified Fair for Life and endorsed by Beauty Without Cruelty South Africa, and as the region's primary employer it gives work to over 100 people, many of whom have grown from farm work into roles in distillation, production and administration.
