In the 1920s, in the small village of Santa Maria de Lamas in northern Portugal, Maria and Manuel Rocha opened their own cork factory to make corks for port wine bottles. They were the great-grandparents of Joana, one of Tiradia's founders, and cork has stayed in her family for generations, from her grandfather Joaquim to her father, Fernando.
Joana met Amanda, who grew up in New York and is vegan, while both were working at a startup in Seattle. Together they founded Tiradia, whose name means the act of cork extraction in Portuguese, work that Tiradia says is done carefully so the tree is never hurt.
Tiradia's mission is to share cork, one of Portugal's treasures, through vegan accessories that are high quality and stylish. It believes no animals should be harmed in making what we wear, and it works to reduce plastic across its supply chain, including in its packaging.
